How to Use "Counter-Conditioning" to Easily Create Good Things in Life? The Magic of Gratitude
At first, acting counter to your habits will feel uncomfortable because you will naturally want to finish what you are doing first. However, within those brief 30 minutes, a lot can happen to make your mood plummet instantly. Not only does this ruin your entire day, but you might also have to deal with unexpected hassles, keeping you from focusing on the right things.
Based on human nature, we usually only do things when there are clear benefits. So, what are the benefits of this practice?
Benefit 1: Breaking the Negative Cycle
Setting an alarm allows you to practice stopping what you are doing and clearing out any irritating emotions you might have just felt. It forces you to instantly focus on finding something to be grateful for. After a few times, your brain will begin to look forward to the alarm rather than letting you dwell in a bad mood. This interruption stops negative thinking in its tracks, preventing you from continuously creating terrible situations.
Benefit 2: Attracting Unexpected Blessings
You will begin to notice the good things happening in your life, the people who treat you well, and the blessings you already have but took for granted.
For example, one of my healing clients used to be consumed by negative thoughts, attracting only bad people and events. This led to judgment, anger, and a deep sense of financial scarcity. After healing, their perspective shifted. While out with their partner, money was lying on the ground right in front of the partner, yet my client—standing further away—was the one who noticed it first. Ever since that shift, they have found it incredibly easy to attract and find money in daily life.
Benefit 3: Projecting Positive Energy onto Objects
You will begin to feel grateful for what you own. Inanimate objects often react to your energetic projection. People who are constantly angry frequently find that their things break down easily. When you thank your possessions for working well—like thanking your air conditioner for keeping you cool on a scorching summer day—it creates a resonance. Your thoughts reflect your reality.
Thank your toilet! The fact that it isn't clogged, saving you money on a plumber, is something truly worth appreciating. When you project love and gratitude toward your things and environment, they reflect that positive state back to you. If you don't believe it, try cursing at your air conditioner, and you'll quickly notice it stops cooling or starts breaking down just to match your mood.
Benefit 4: Appreciating Your Body and Yourself
Take a moment to reflect. If you were unable to see right now, how would you look at the people and scenery you love? If you couldn't speak, how would you do your job or express yourself to family and friends? If you lost your mobility, what would life look like?
Our bodies never stop working for us, yet we constantly forget to thank them. We also forget to appreciate the effort we put in to get to where we are today. Criticizing yourself only forces your body and mental state to mirror those negative thoughts. The more you view yourself as a failure, the more your brain executes that command, leading you to make decisions that reinforce that failure. Once you understand this brain mechanism, you realize how crucial it is to thank your body and appreciate everything you do well. Focus on your wins, and your brain will automatically form a habit of making successful decisions.
Your Brain is Eager for a New Command
Can you think of even more benefits? Then start practicing! The person who benefits the most will be you. Happiness and success don't require forced practice; you simply need to focus on your successes and what you already possess. Your brain will automatically handle the rest.
When you focus on gratitude, you will quickly realize how deeply your family loves you, even if they aren't good at expressing it. This allows you to look past judgment, anger, and resentment, revealing how much the people around you truly care for and support you. Your old beliefs and anger were simply blinding you.
When emotions run high, all you need to do is step away from the space, pause, and focus on what you appreciate about the other person, or find anything else to be grateful for. This instantly shifts your emotional state, protecting your relationships from being damaged by temporary moods.
If practicing gratitude feels too difficult, consider the alternative. Imagine the much worse outcomes that happen when you don't. Your brain won't stop creating difficult challenges just because you choose not to practice gratitude. Replicating your past experiences is your subconscious mind's default automation.
Give your brain a new assignment today: give it the job of gratitude.
